What is sentence case?
Sentence case capitalizes a title the way you would a sentence: the first word, the first word after a colon, proper nouns and acronyms start with a capital, and every other word is lowercase.

When to use sentence case
- APA reference lists: the titles of articles, books, reports and webpages. Journal names stay in title case (see APA title case).
- News headlines: the AP and many newspapers capitalize only the first word and proper nouns.
- Product and documentation text: Microsoft’s and Google’s writing style guides use sentence case for headings, buttons and menus.
- Email subject lines and slide titles, which often read more naturally that way.
How the converter decides
- It capitalizes the first word, and the first word after a colon, period, question mark or exclamation point — but not after an abbreviation such as U.S. or Dr.
- Paste a title in Title Case and the capitals title case added are removed. Paste ALL CAPS and the whole title is lowercased first.
- Acronyms (NASA, FBI), words with a capital inside (iPhone, eBay, McDonald’s) and the word I keep their capitals.
- It cannot know which words are names. Capitalize a proper noun by selecting its first letter and typing it as a capital: capitals you type are kept.
Sentence case vs. title case
Title case capitalizes every major word (The Old Man and the Sea); sentence case capitalizes only the first (The old man and the sea). The style guide decides which to use: APA uses title case for headings and sentence case in references; Chicago and MLA use title case for titles; AP uses title case for composition titles and sentence case for headlines.
